Summary of My Exchange Journey In Taiwan-
< Image Through Different Eyes>
Hi,
I am Huini, EP from Malaysia who joined the AIESEC Global Citizen Program
<Image through Different Eyes> in Taiwan. The jobs scopes of this program
are about interact with elders, attend classes and wall painting. I stayed in
host family’s house during these 7 weeks and they also provided foods for me. I
observed the friendliness and enthusiasm in Taiwanese. They welcomed me with
kind hospitality and gave souvenirs in the first day we met. I felt very
surprised because I did not expect they would prepare souvenirs for me! The
family members in the house consists of parents, 2 sisters who are both younger
than me, a grandfather and 2 adorably doggies in the house. I slept together
with the sister in a double bed. After settled up all my stuff, my journey in
Taiwan had just started!!!
The name
of the community I served was “Association of Li Gong Development”. I attended
the community’s activities on every Tuesday and Saturday. The amount of elders
here is about 20 elders and their ages are around 70-80 years old. I introduced
myself to them and they felt felicitated because I can speak in mandarin to communicate
with them. The leader of the community always plan and organize programs which
are beneficial to elders. One of the examples is “Talk of security”. They
invited police to the community, taught and gave advises to the public on how
to prevent criminals and cheats. Besides, they also invited lecturers from
outside to deliver talk about “How to enjoying your elder life with health” and
“Happiness Life”. I think that these will increase the confidence of elders to
live healthily and joyfully. Furthermore, they also organized the event for
giving free medical check-up, nail painting; free hair cutting, medical consultation
for public. This event was not only for elders, residents nearby all are
invited to participate.
On the
other hand, every Saturday is the “sports day” for community, because they
invited the teacher of belly dance come here to teach elders. The teacher was
professional and full of patient. She always asked for opinions from elders
“are these actions suitable for you all?” or “It is too difficult to do?” Elders
are also very cooperating with teacher. They followed every step and try to
remember it. They will have a competition of belly dance in the coming end of
august, so they need to practice hard to perform well in the stage. Good Luck
to the elders! Enjoy the moment!
The other job scope for me is wall
painting. I painted the wall with a group of high school students who came from
Jian Gong Senior High School “Chun Hui Club”, which is a society serving club.
We painted the wall by following the art leader. She drawn the draft at the
wall first and we painted them in color. She was drawing well and creative! We processed
our painting job in every afternoon from 3pm to 5pm. The process of painting
was fast and high efficiency. The residents nearby was amazed by the painting.
The reason to choose this place is to enlighten the area with colorful drawing
and make residents feeling joyfully when watching these painting. We painted
the wall with famous images like “LINE” icons and the cartoons that children
like. The truth has proven that, we succeed in attracting the residents’ eyes.
I can obviously tell that many residents are willing to come out compared to
the first day we reached here!
What I have learnt from this project
is, I have observed that they are caring to the elders and deformity. They are
sending free meals everyday to their houses whose are not able to cook
themselves and go out. The costs of meals are all sponsored by the government there
and give community to caring out this project of sending meals. From the aspect
of meals, they also need to be qualified and access the quality of health. I
think this is important to learn about the method to caring them and people who
are disability. Furthermore, I observed that the difference is the elders there
are willing to go out for exercise, joining activities actively, and willing to
volunteer to associate project to be carried out successfully. The spirit of
not recognized themselves are old is deserved to be respect and learn from.
I really enjoyed immensely in this project. I do
not regret choosing this project. Besides, I am very grateful to choose this
project and met so many people who are nice and friendly. The leader of the
community- Miss Chin, she is a nice person. I associated her to complete the
video by editing and collecting all the videos and photos and made them into
one video to present to the government. She also shared her splendid life with
me. Our relationship was getting closer. She acted as my friend and taught me
many things. I have learnt a lot of positive attitudes from her. She is worth
to be praised!
Last
but not least, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my host family as
I have stayed in their house for quite a long time. They have brought me the
joy of camping with them. This is indeed a good chance to experience the camping
style in Taiwan. We have also visited the beach in Yi Lan, night markets, and
fulfill my dream to find the horse. I’m also very lucky to celebrate their aunt’s
20thanniversary marriage and also her birthday. Thus, I did a card
for her which recorded all the 7 weeks we spent together. In the last day which
I have to fly back to my country, they sent me to the airport. I was really sad
to leave and bid farewell to them. They bought souvenirs for me and asked me to
bring back for my parents. At that particular moment, I couldn’t say a word; I
was surprised and touched. It was my honor to meet them in Taiwan. I hope if I ever
had the chance to visit Taiwan again, I will visit them. Thank you very much!!
